2018 Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco 'Reyna' Piedmont
Winemaker Notes: The vineyards lie on the steep, southwest facing Langhe hillsides. Grapes are harvested an average of 10 to 15 days later than normal, resulting in extremely rich musts high in sugar and lower in acidity. Temperature controlled fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French Allier and Slavonian oak followed by additional aging in bottle.
TASTING NOTE
Pure, high-toned red berry aromas and flavors with green peppercorn, spice and almond notes, surround a core of vivid acidity and moderate tannins. Similar in character to Barolo, but more delicate, this Barbaresco has great aging potential.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Wine Enthusiast - "Aromas of truffle, rose, violet and camphor shape the enticing nose along with a whiff of leather. On the savory, linear palate, bright acidity and polished tannins accompany ripe raspberry, black cherry, tobacco and ground clove. Drink 2023–2033."
James Suckling - "Lots going on on the nose, with dried cherries and strawberries, colored by sous-bois elements, such as dried leaves and grilled mushrooms. Some brighter dried-flowers, too. Very nebbiolo and compact. Medium-bodied with lightly firm, dusty tannins and a nicely controlled finish. Delicious to drink now, but this will age, too."
