2017 Domaine Forey Père et Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru Côte de Nuits

Winemaker Notes: This fine Grand Cru is from a Forey-owned parcel of three-tenths of a hectare. The precise site is in the climats of “Les Treux” and “Clos Saint Denis” which generally are geographically between “Les Suchots” and “Les Grands Echezeaux”. One third of the vines were planted in 1949 with the rest being planted in two waves: 1974 and again in 2004.

Burghound - "Régis Forey describes the 2018 growing season as "one was so exceptionally hot and dry that gave us very ripe raw materials to work with. I chose to wait to pick until the 12th of September as I didn't feel as though the tannins were sufficiently ripe and while that strategy did work for the tannins, the compromise is that I don't have one wine that came in under 14%. I suppose that's a plus for my American importer and avoiding the tariffs though all joking aside, that's not why I look for in a wine. With that said, if I have to choose between under ripe tannins and higher alcohols levels, for me it's an easy choice. There was an early season mildew attack that had us on edge and then July brought 3 different hailstorms that affected some of my vines in Nuits. Despite these problems, yields averaged right at 37 hl/ha and I used 40 to 80% whole clusters for everything including the Bourgogne. I also chose to use a bit more new wood than usual though with a very light toast and the barrels ends are untoasted. Stylistically, I would compare the 2018s to the 2017s but with better concentration and ripeness levels. Forey noted that his 2017s, revisited below, were bottled between November 2019 and January 2019."
